Master Key Systems in Aurora & Denver

Carrying a ring of 20 keys, or handing out copies every time someone needs into a storage room, gets expensive and hard to track. A master key system fixes that: each person carries one key that opens exactly the doors they need, and managers carry one key that opens everything. Lucky Lock designs, installs and maintains master key systems for businesses, property managers and landlords across Aurora and the Denver metro.

What is a master key system?

A master key system is a set of locks pinned so that different keys open different combinations of doors. Every lock still has its own key, but higher-level keys open groups of locks, and the top key opens all of them.

A typical setup has three or four levels:

  • Grand master key: opens every lock in the system. Usually held by the owner or facilities manager.
  • Master keys: open one group of doors, such as one building, one floor or one department.
  • Change keys: open a single door, like one office or one apartment unit.

For example, in a small office building, each tenant’s key opens only their suite, the building manager’s master key opens every suite on their floor, and the owner’s grand master opens every door in the building, including mechanical and storage rooms.

Who uses a master key system

  • Property managers and landlords: each tenant has a key to their unit; maintenance has one key for every unit and common area.
  • Offices and businesses: employees open their own areas, managers open their departments, and the owner opens everything.
  • Retail and restaurants: staff can open the front door but not the office, safe room or stockroom.
  • HOAs, churches, schools and clinics: many doors, many keyholders and access that changes often.

Why a master key system is worth it

  • Fewer keys. Managers carry one key instead of a full ring.
  • The right access for each person. Nobody has a key to a door they don’t need.
  • Cheaper staff and tenant changes. When someone leaves without returning a key, you rekey the doors that key opened, not the whole building.
  • A written record. You know which key opens which door and who holds it.

Key control: stopping unauthorized copies

A master key system is only as secure as its keys. If anyone can walk into a hardware store and copy the grand master, the system loses its value.

For that reason we recommend a restricted keyway for most master key systems. Restricted key blanks aren’t sold to the public or hardware stores, so copies can only be made through an authorized locksmith with the owner’s approval. Combined with a key log showing who holds which key, it gives you real control over access.

How we set up your system

  1. Walk-through. We visit the property, count the doors and locks, and check the condition and brand of your existing hardware.
  2. Plan the access. Together we decide who needs to open which doors. This becomes the key schedule: a chart of every key level and every door it opens.
  3. Design the system. We work out the pinning for every lock so each key opens exactly the doors on the schedule, with room to add doors and keys later.
  4. Pin and install. We rekey your existing locks where they’re in good condition and replace or upgrade the ones that aren’t. Each cylinder is pinned to the plan and installed on-site.
  5. Cut and label the keys. Every key is cut, tested in the doors it should open and the doors it shouldn’t, and stamped with a code instead of a room name.
  6. Hand over the records. You get the key schedule so you know exactly what each key opens.

Can you use my existing locks?

Often, yes. Many commercial and residential locks can be rekeyed into a master key system, which keeps the cost down. Locks that are worn, low-grade or mismatched brands may need to be replaced or fitted with new cylinders. During the walk-through we’ll tell you which locks can stay and which should go.

For buildings that change keyholders often, we can also set up interchangeable cores. The core of the lock can be removed with a control key and swapped in seconds, so you can change who has access to a door without taking the lock apart.

Keeping your system up to date

A master key system grows with your property. When you add a door, lose a key or have a tenant or employee leave, we can:

  • Add new doors and new keys within the existing system
  • Rekey only the locks a lost key opened
  • Cut additional authorized keys from restricted blanks
  • Update your key schedule so your records stay accurate

If you inherited a system with no records, or nobody remembers which key opens what, we can survey the locks and rebuild the key schedule.

One honest tradeoff

Because each lock in a master key system accepts more than one key, it has more possible combinations than a single-keyed lock and is slightly less resistant to picking. A well-designed system, a restricted keyway and good key control keep that risk low. For high-security doors like server rooms, pharmacies or cash rooms, we can key those locks separately or use high-security cylinders.

Common questions

How many doors do I need for a master key system to make sense?
There’s no minimum. Even a small office with a front door, a back door and two private offices benefits when different people need different access. The bigger the property and the more keyholders, the more you save.

What happens if someone loses a master key?
Only the locks that key opens need to be rekeyed. Because the system is planned in levels, a lost change key affects one door, and a lost master affects only its group of doors.

Can a master key system include my home?
Yes, though most homes need something simpler: keying all your doors alike so one key opens every door. Master key systems are mainly for rentals, multi-unit properties and businesses.

Can I add smart locks or keypads?
Many keypad and smart locks have a key cylinder as a backup, and that cylinder can usually be included in the system. We’ll check compatibility during the walk-through. See smart lock installation.

How much does a master key system cost?
It depends on the number of doors, whether your existing locks can be reused, the number of keys and whether you choose a restricted keyway. Call or text for a walk-through and a written quote. See how our pricing works.
